The international women’s day celebrates 100 years

Today the international women’s day is 100 years old. In March 1911 one million women of Germany, Denmark, Switzerland and Austria took to the streets to claim their rights. This day so they celebrated in different parts of the world and in Russia it is a festive day.

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev congratulated all women through its website on Twitter. On the eve of the feast, Prime Minister Vladimir Putin also congratulated Russian women on his day, emphasizing the role of women in the life of every man.

The Secretary-General of the United Nations, Ban Ki-moon, in his speech devoted to the international women’s day said “100 years ago, when the world was celebrating for the first time this day, the concept of equality between men and women, as well as the expansion of the rights of women were ideas of radical character.” The top international official stressed that since that time, thanks to common efforts, humanity has come a long way.

Currently the role of women in social and political life is becoming increasingly important. Thus the women have become heads of Governments and States, and although time women are at the head of less than 10 per cent of the countries, it is a well marked upward trend. Lately this tendency is very noticeable in the Latin American continent where women hold high public office. Suffice it to mention to the Presidents of Brazil, Argentina, Costa Rica and the former President of Chile to understand that feminists have settled in the political arena and not think to assign positions.

However, in many countries women continue to be battered and lack of a series of basic rights and resolving this situation is one of the primary tasks of the international community.
